Why are healthy gums important?

Healthy gums support your teeth and prevent inflammation.

Together with the jawbone, the gums form the foundation of your teeth. When the gums are healthy, they hold the teeth firmly in place. Inflamed gums can lead to gum recession and bone loss. This process is often painless but can eventually cause teeth to become loose. Healthy gums are pink, fit snugly against the teeth and do not bleed. Daily thorough brushing and interdental cleaning keep the gums in good condition. Visiting your dentist or dental hygienist helps to pick up problems early. Long-term gum problems can also affect your general health. There is a proven link with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Looking after your gums is therefore also looking after your overall wellbeing.
