After tooth loss, the jawbone shrinks. If there is too little bone to place the implant securely, bone augmentation (bone grafting) may be needed. This involves using your own bone or an artificial bone substitute to restore the bone volume.
The augmentation is sometimes carried out beforehand and sometimes at the same time as the implant placement. Your clinician decides this on the basis of X-rays or 3D scans.
