Periodontology - Symptoms and Diagnosis

How do I know whether my jawbone is being affected?

Jawbone loss is usually discovered through X-rays and pocket measurements.

Jawbone loss usually develops gradually and without obvious symptoms. You only notice it once teeth become loose or start to shift. A dentist or periodontist can pick this up at an early stage. During check-ups, a periodontal probe is used to measure the depth of the gum pockets. Deeper periodontal pockets often indicate a breakdown of the supporting tissues. X-rays show the level of the jawbone around the teeth. In periodontitis, the bone is damaged by chronic inflammation. Bone loss can also occur with poorly fitting dentures or implants. A timely diagnosis prevents further damage. Based on these measurements, your clinician draws up a treatment plan.
