How do I recognise gum inflammation?

By red, swollen or bleeding gums, often without any pain.

Gum inflammation, also known as gingivitis, usually starts without any obvious pain. You may notice that your gums are redder than usual and feel tender or swollen when touched. Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are often a clear sign. An unpleasant taste or bad breath can also point to inflamed gums. Although it may seem harmless, without treatment it can progress to periodontitis. With thorough brushing, interdental cleaning and professional removal of tartar, the gums can recover. Gum inflammation is reversible if it is caught at an early stage. Regular check-ups help to detect it early. A dental hygienist can advise you on the right oral care. Do not ignore these signals, because acting early prevents more serious damage.
