Periodontal therapy may consist of non-surgical and surgical treatment. Both are aimed at healing the supporting structures of the teeth and creating a stable situation. Although there is no medication that cures periodontal disease, there are methods to keep the progression of periodontitis under control and drastically reduce the risk of tooth loss. Read on for more information about our non-surgical treatments.
Plaque, Tartar and Root Surface Cleaning
The first phase of treatment is usually a thorough cleaning to remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gums.
The tooth roots are also cleaned and the root surfaces smoothed, so that the gums can heal and reattach to the tooth. In some cases the occlusion (the bite) will need to be adjusted.
Periodontal Maintenance
After a complete course of periodontal treatment your gums are healthy again, but you are never fully cured. Periodontal diseases are chronic conditions, just like diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which require ongoing maintenance to ensure that the disease remains inactive.
Medication
In some cases medication is prescribed at the time the thorough cleaning takes place. Antibiotics are medicines that combat infections caused by bacteria.
