Tooth loss and its consequences

Teeth can be lost for various reasons, such as periodontitis, extensive tooth decay, an accident or a failed root canal treatment. Whatever the cause, tooth loss affects not only oral health but also overall quality of life.

What happens when a tooth is lost?

When a tooth is lost, it is not only a functional part of the dentition that disappears. Gradual changes also take place in the mouth and jaw:

  • The jawbone shrinks where there is no longer a tooth root. This process begins almost immediately after the tooth is lost.
  • Neighbouring teeth drift towards the empty space, which can lead to misalignment and problems with the bite.
  • The ability to chew is reduced, especially when several teeth are lost.
  • The appearance of the face changes due to loss of support in the jaw, which can lead to a sunken mouth or an aged appearance.
  • Tooth loss can lead to reduced self-confidence, especially where teeth in the aesthetic zone (front teeth) are concerned.

Longer-term consequences

If tooth loss is not addressed in time, serious complications can develop in the longer term:

  • Accelerated bone loss: the jawbone becomes progressively thinner and lower, making future replacement options (such as dental implants) more difficult.
  • Gum problems: the remaining teeth are subjected to greater loads, which increases the risk of new problems.
  • Speech problems: particularly with the loss of front teeth or several molars.
  • A disturbed dental balance, resulting in complaints in the jaw joint or muscle pain in the face.

Timely replacement is important

It is therefore important to replace a lost tooth in good time. There are various treatment options, depending on the situation:

  • Dental implants: a durable and natural solution that stimulates the jawbone and takes over the function of the tooth root.
  • Bridges: a fixed replacement supported by the adjacent teeth.
  • Removable dentures: suitable where several teeth are missing or where implants are not possible.

In many cases, the damage can be limited or even fully repaired – provided that action is taken quickly and thoughtfully.
