Periodontology - Symptoms and Diagnosis

What does it mean if my gums bleed spontaneously?

Spontaneous bleeding can indicate inflammation or periodontitis; always have it checked.

Gums that bleed spontaneously are a warning sign of inflammation or even periodontitis. Healthy gums do not bleed spontaneously, not even when touched lightly. The cause may be a build-up of plaque and bacteria along the gum line. Hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy, can also make the gums more sensitive. Poor oral hygiene is often the direct cause of bleeding gums. In periodontitis, the periodontal pockets can be so deep that the inflammation stays hidden below the surface of the gums. Prolonged bleeding without an obvious cause can also indicate a clotting problem. Your dentist can assess the problem with a periodontal chart and, if necessary, X-rays. Treatment usually consists of a thorough cleaning and improved oral hygiene instructions. Do not ignore this symptom, because acting early prevents further problems.
