Periodontology - Symptoms and Diagnosis

How do I recognise a jaw joint problem?

Pain, clicking sounds and limited mouth opening are typical symptoms.

Jaw joint problems (TMD) often present as pain when chewing or yawning. Clicking or grinding sounds when moving the mouth are common. Limited mouth opening (less than three fingers wide) is a warning sign. Headaches, earache and jaw fatigue are possible accompanying symptoms. Tooth grinding or clenching usually makes the symptoms worse. Stress and poor posture can be contributing factors. A dental examination can reveal problems with the bite or patterns of wear. Soft food and warm compresses give temporary relief. A dental specialist may recommend an occlusal splint or physiotherapy. Early treatment prevents chronic symptoms and further damage.
