Why do I feel pain when eating hot or cold food after treatment?

Sensitive tooth necks or temporary irritation may be the cause.

After gum treatment, the necks of the teeth can become exposed. These are more sensitive to changes in temperature. The sensitivity is often temporary and decreases as the gums heal. Using a special toothpaste can help to reduce the symptoms. Avoid very hot or cold drinks in the first few days. Brushing too hard can also cause extra sensitivity. If the pain persists, please contact your practitioner. There may be an exposed nerve canal or a hypersensitive tooth neck. Your dentist can then apply a protective varnish or suggest additional treatment. In most cases the sensitivity is harmless and passes with time.
