What if a suture comes loose before my follow-up appointment?

Contact the practice; it is usually not serious, but it does need to be checked.

It can happen that a suture comes loose after gum or implant surgery. This is usually no cause for alarm, especially if the wound remains properly closed. Even so, it is wise to phone the practice about it. In some cases you will be asked to come in for a check-up. A loose suture can irritate or trap food debris. If there is pain, bleeding or an open wound, contact us straight away. Never cut off a troublesome suture thread yourself without consulting us. Your practitioner will assess whether a new suture is needed. In many cases the area still heals without complications. Always follow the aftercare instructions to reduce the risk of sutures coming loose.
