Gum surgery is generally safe, but as with any procedure there are risks. After the treatment you may experience temporary pain or swelling. Some bleeding in the first 24 hours is not unusual, but it is usually mild. In rare cases an infection may develop at the surgical site. Poor oral hygiene after the procedure increases this risk. Sometimes gum recession occurs, exposing the necks of the teeth. Temporary tooth sensitivity may also develop. Your clinician will give you instructions to limit these risks. Antibiotics and painkillers can be prescribed if necessary. Regular check-ups help detect complications early.
