What is laser treatment for the gums?

Laser treatment removes inflamed tissue and bacteria using light energy.

In laser treatment, inflamed gum tissue is removed with a concentrated beam of light. The laser kills bacteria and stimulates the healing process of the gums. It is a minimally invasive method that often causes less post-operative pain. The treatment is sometimes used as an alternative or a supplement to flap surgery. The laser allows precise work without damaging the surrounding tissue. It bleeds less than traditional methods and recovery is often faster. Not all patients are suitable for laser therapy; an evaluation is needed. Laser treatments are particularly effective in the early or moderate stages of periodontitis. The costs can be slightly higher than for conventional treatments. Your practitioner will discuss with you beforehand whether this option is suitable for you.
