What is crown lengthening?

A procedure to expose more of the tooth for restorative or aesthetic purposes.

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure in which gum tissue and sometimes bone is removed. This exposes more tooth structure for a crown or filling. It is needed when tooth decay lies below the gum line. It is also used for broken teeth or for aesthetic improvement. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. The gums are sutured and heal in 1-2 weeks. Temporary sensitivity to temperature is possible. The result is a more stable base for restorations. Good oral hygiene speeds up the healing process. This treatment often saves teeth that would otherwise have to be extracted.
