What is a deep cleaning?

An intensive professional dental cleaning that reaches below the gum line.

A deep cleaning, also known as root planing, is intended to clean inflamed periodontal pockets. Plaque and tartar are removed from below the gums. The treatment is often carried out under local anaesthetic. Special instruments are used to smooth the root surfaces. This prevents new bacteria from attaching and promotes healing. After the treatment, the gums may be temporarily sensitive. Good oral hygiene at home is essential for a lasting result. The treatment can be spread over several sessions. A follow-up check usually takes place a few weeks later. As things improve, the gums become tighter and less sensitive.
