How long does swelling last after a tooth extraction?

Swelling peaks at 2-3 days and then gradually subsides.

Swelling after an extraction peaks at 48-72 hours. Cold compresses during the first 24 hours considerably reduce swelling. After that, warm compresses can promote healing. Keeping your head raised while sleeping reduces morning swelling. Mild swelling can persist for up to a week after complex extractions. Abnormal swelling after 3 days may indicate an infection. Avoid strenuous exercise, which increases blood flow and swelling. Take any prescribed medication strictly as instructed. Swelling should improve every day, not get worse.
