What is implantology?

Implantology is the field of dentistry that specialises in placing dental implants. An implant is an artificial root placed in the jawbone to replace a lost tooth. Most implants are made of titanium, a material that is well tolerated by the human body. After placement, the jawbone grows around the implant, which is known as osseointegration. A crown, bridge or denture can then be attached to the implant. This solution is long-lasting and often feels like a natural tooth. Implantology requires good general health and sufficient bone volume in the jaw. Sometimes bone augmentation is needed before an implant can be placed. The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic. After placement, good oral hygiene is essential to prevent inflammation.
