Implants - Other Aspects

How do I know whether my jawbone is suitable for implants?

A scan or X-ray shows whether there is enough bone volume.

Not everyone has enough jawbone for an implant to be placed. That is why an X-ray or 3D scan is always taken beforehand. These images provide insight into the height, width and quality of the bone. Sometimes the bone needs to be built up before an implant can be placed. Your clinician will discuss this with you at the initial consultation. If the bone is too narrow or too low, bone augmentation or a sinus lift may be needed. Smoking and gum problems can affect bone quality. In some cases, alternatives such as a bridge are more suitable. Modern techniques are making implant placement possible in an ever wider range of situations. Good bone structure is essential for long-term success.
