Implants - Other Aspects

How do I recognise an infection around my implant?

Inflammation around an implant, known as peri-implantitis, causes redness, swelling and bleeding.

Inflammation around an implant is called peri-implantitis and can have serious consequences. The first sign is often redness and swelling of the gums around the implant crown. Bleeding may also occur when brushing or using interdental brushes. Sometimes an unpleasant taste or pus develops, which indicates a bacterial infection. At an advanced stage, the implant can become loose due to bone loss. Pain when touching or chewing is a sign that the inflammation has progressed further. It is important to make a check-up appointment early so the problem can be assessed. Treatment usually consists of thorough cleaning and sometimes a course of antibiotics. In severe cases, surgery may be needed to repair the bone. Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups help prevent peri-implantitis.
