Implants - Other Aspects

How does smoking affect the success of an implant-supported bridge?

It doubles the risk of failure through reduced blood flow and healing.

Smokers have a 3 times higher risk of peri-implantitis. Osseointegration is delayed (6-8 months versus 3-4 months). There is a greater chance of post-operative infections (20% versus 5%). Aesthetic results are poorer due to paler gums. Implant survival after 10 years: 65% versus 90% in non-smokers. Stopping 4 weeks before and after surgery halves the risks. Nicotine replacements (patches) reduce vasoconstriction. Smoking-related discolouration of ceramics does occur. Dentists often recommend smoking cessation programmes before surgery.
