Implants are made of strong titanium and designed for long-term use. Nevertheless, in rare cases an implant can break. Causes include extreme loading, wear, poor bone integration or a material defect. A fracture occurs more often in the abutment than in the implant itself. Symptoms include mobility, pain or loss of the crown. If a fracture is suspected, an X-ray is taken. If necessary, the implant is removed and replaced. Good oral hygiene, regular check-ups and avoiding overloading reduce the risk. For bruxism, a night guard is often recommended. Fracture is exceptional, but timely check-ups prevent complications.
Implants - Other Aspects
Can an implant break?
It is rare, but fracture can occur under extreme loading or due to material problems.
