Implants - Other Aspects

Can I have an MRI scan with an implant?

Yes, titanium implants are MRI-safe.

Most dental implants are made of titanium or a titanium alloy. This material is non-magnetic and poses no risk during an MRI scan. In some cases, however, it can cause some distortion of the scan images. It is therefore important to inform your doctor or radiologist about your implants. In certain cases, implants can cause shadows or artefacts on images of the head and neck area. Implants rarely give reason to postpone an MRI examination. Their safety has been clinically studied and is generally regarded as reliable. Do you also have metal crowns, bridges or braces? These may have an effect. Your clinician can always provide a written statement for you to take with you. In practice, an implant is rarely a limitation for modern diagnostic imaging.
