Implants - Treatments

What is peri-implantitis?

Peri-implantitis is an inflammation around a dental implant that causes bone loss.

Peri-implantitis is a serious inflammation of the gums and jawbone surrounding an implant. It usually develops as a result of inadequate cleaning or poor oral hygiene. Bacteria accumulate around the implant and cause inflammation. The first symptoms are bleeding gums and swelling around the implant. If this is not treated in time, the jawbone may be broken down. The implant may then lose its stability. In severe cases, the implant has to be removed. A good brushing routine and regular check-ups are crucial. Sometimes the inflammation is treated surgically. With peri-implantitis, prevention matters more than cure.
