If inflammation develops around an implant, flap surgery may be necessary. During this operation the gum is temporarily folded back. This gives the clinician access to the root or the implant surface. Inflamed tissue is removed and the area is thoroughly cleaned. Sometimes additional materials are placed to stimulate bone growth. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. Afterwards the gum is stitched back and you receive aftercare instructions. The aim is to keep the implant and stop further bone loss. Regular check-ups follow the operation to monitor healing. Flap surgery is effective for moderate to severe peri-implantitis.
