Implants - Treatments

How many implants are needed for a partial bridge?

At least 2 implants for a bridge of 3-4 teeth.

The number of implants depends on the length of the gap and the biting forces involved. As a rule of thumb: 1 implant for every 2 teeth replaced. Where chewing forces are high (the back of the mouth), more implants are needed. A free-end bridge (e.g. 3 teeth) requires at least 2 implants. Cantilever designs (an overhanging tooth) are not recommended because of the risk of overloading. 3D planning optimises implant positions for even distribution of forces. Extra implants increase stability but also the cost. Bone quality determines what is possible: type IV bone often requires additional implants. A temporary denture supports tissue healing during osseointegration.
