Periodontology - Aftercare and Recovery

When can I brush my teeth again after gum surgery?

Brushing is usually allowed from day 2, following specific instructions.

After gum surgery it is important to take great care with your oral hygiene. For the first 24 hours after the procedure, brushing in the treated area is not recommended. From day 2 you can usually start again carefully with a soft brush. Your clinician will tell you which areas you may and may not brush. Electric toothbrushes are sometimes temporarily discouraged. If prescribed, use a mouth rinse to keep the area clean. Avoid pressure on the stitches and take care where there is swelling or tenderness. Do brush the rest of your teeth as usual. Good cleaning promotes healing and prevents infection. Always follow the personal aftercare advice you are given after your treatment.
