Periodontology - Aftercare and Recovery

What should I do if my gums keep bleeding after treatment?

Persistent bleeding after treatment can indicate complications; always consult your dentist.

It is normal to have some bleeding after periodontal treatment, especially in the first 24 hours. If the bleeding continues for longer or becomes heavier, however, this is a cause for concern. Use a sterile gauze pad to apply gentle pressure to the bleeding spot. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting, as this can prolong the bleeding. Smoking and drinking hot drinks can irritate the gums and make bleeding worse. Contact your dentist straight away if the bleeding does not ease after a few hours. In some cases a stitch may have come loose, which requires further treatment. If bleeding occurs at night, stay sitting upright and avoid lying down to reduce the pressure. Your dentist can use haemostatic agents to stop the bleeding. Thorough brushing and careful use of interdental brushes help to prevent bleeding in the long term.
