Periodontology - Aftercare and Recovery

How do I look after a gum graft?

Brush gently and use the prescribed mouth rinses.

After a gum graft, careful aftercare is crucial for success. For the first 24 hours you must not rinse or touch the area. After that, use a prescribed antiseptic mouth rinse 2-3 times a day. Brush gently with a soft brush and avoid direct contact with the stitches. Eat only soft, cold food for the first few days. Smoking is strictly forbidden because it reduces the blood supply. Swelling can be reduced with cold compresses. Take painkillers as prescribed, but avoid aspirin because of the risk of bleeding. Check daily for signs of infection such as increasing pain or pus. Follow all of your periodontist's instructions carefully for the best possible recovery.
