Periodontology - Aftercare and Recovery

What is guided tissue regeneration (GTR)?

GTR is a technique in which the jawbone and supporting tissue are stimulated to regenerate.

Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a regenerative technique in periodontology. The aim is to rebuild lost supporting tissue around a tooth. During the treatment a special membrane is placed between the gum and the bone. This membrane prevents fast-growing gum tissue from overgrowing the area. This gives the bone and the ligament the chance to regenerate. The technique is used for deep bone defects caused by periodontitis. Success depends on oral hygiene and the anatomy of the defect. The treatment is usually carried out in combination with scaling and root planing. Patients experience little discomfort after the procedure. GTR is an effective method for keeping teeth for longer.
