Sensitivity after root canal treatment is normal during healing. In the first 2-3 days there may be tenderness to pressure when chewing. Mild pain usually responds well to over-the-counter painkillers. Sharp pain that gets worse requires professional assessment. Sensitivity should gradually decrease within 1-2 weeks. Avoid chewing hard on the treated tooth until the symptoms have gone. Swelling or persistent pain may indicate complications. Sometimes additional treatment is needed for a full recovery. Most patients are free of symptoms after 7-10 days. Follow all of your dentist's aftercare instructions carefully.
