Implants - Aftercare and Recovery

Why does my implant feel loose after several years?

A loose implant may indicate bone loss or peri-implantitis; contact your clinician straight away.

A loose implant is always a cause for concern and requires immediate investigation. After placement, an implant normally integrates firmly with the jawbone. If it feels loose after several years, this may indicate bone loss around the implant. Peri-implantitis is a common cause, in which a bacterial infection attacks the bone. Mechanical problems, such as a loose abutment screw, can also be the cause. X-rays can show whether there is bone loss or a technical problem. Sometimes simply re-tightening is enough if the screw has come loose. In cases of severe bone loss, regenerative treatment is needed to save the implant. Regular aftercare and professional cleaning often prevent problems in the long term. Contact your clinician immediately if an implant feels loose, to prevent further damage.
