Implants - Aftercare and Recovery

What happens if I do not clean my implant properly?

Poor cleaning can lead to inflammation and loss of the implant.

Like a natural tooth, an implant needs daily care. Inadequate cleaning leads to a build-up of bacteria around the implant. This can cause inflammation of the surrounding gums, known as mucositis. Without treatment, this can progress to peri-implantitis, in which bone is also lost. This process is often painless, but eventually causes the implant to become loose. Interdental brushes, floss and soft toothbrushes are needed for effective cleaning. An electric toothbrush can help with daily maintenance. Regular professional check-ups help detect problems at an early stage. The implantologist or dental hygienist gives personal cleaning instructions. Good maintenance is crucial to the lifespan of an implant.
