An implant coming loose is a serious sign that requires immediate attention. In many cases it is not the implant itself that is loose, but the crown or abutment on top of it. This may be due to wear or to a screw connection working loose. If the implant really is loose in the jawbone, there may be a failure of integration or bone loss. This can be caused by peri-implantitis or overloading. In such cases, the implant often has to be removed. Your clinician will assess the situation and take a new scan if necessary. Prompt action can sometimes prevent further damage to the jawbone. Once the area has healed, it may be possible to place a new implant. Prevent problems through thorough cleaning and regular check-ups.
