Periodontology - Preparation and First Consultation

How long does the first consultation with a periodontist take?

The first consultation usually takes between 45 and 75 minutes.

A first appointment with the periodontist is thorough and informative. The consultation begins with a discussion of your medical history and symptoms. This is followed by a clinical examination in which your gums and teeth are assessed. Using a periodontal probe, the depth of the gum pockets around all your teeth is measured. X-rays are often taken to get a complete picture of the jawbone. On the basis of these findings, the periodontist makes a diagnosis. You will receive an explanation of the findings and the possible treatments. There is time for questions and for discussing your wishes. At the end, you will usually receive a provisional treatment plan and a cost overview. Depending on the complexity, the consultation usually takes between 45 and 75 minutes.
