An apicectomy is a microsurgical procedure on the tip of the root. It is carried out when a root canal treatment alone is not enough. The dentist makes a small opening in the bone to reach the root tip. Inflamed tissue is removed and the root tip is amputated. A retrograde filling seals the canal against bacteria. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. Healing takes several weeks to months. Follow-up X-rays confirm successful bone regeneration. This treatment can save teeth that would otherwise have to be extracted. It is a last resort for preserving natural teeth.
