A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure to correct an abnormally thick or tight frenum (the small fold of tissue). It may be needed because of speech problems, gum recession or orthodontic reasons. The procedure is performed with a scalpel, laser or electrocautery. In children it is usually done under local anaesthetic; in babies sometimes without. Recovery usually takes 1-2 weeks with minimal discomfort. Specific exercises may be prescribed after the procedure. It prevents future gum problems and improves mobility. Complications are rare but may include slight bleeding or infection. This simple procedure can bring significant functional improvements.
