A pulpotomy is a child-friendly version of root canal treatment. Only the inflamed crown portion of the pulp is removed. The healthy root pulp is preserved so the tooth can continue to develop. It is often used for deep decay in primary (milk) molars. The treatment prevents the premature loss of important milk teeth. A medicated dressing protects the remaining pulp. A paediatric crown is then placed for protection. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. It is a successful method for relieving pain and preserving teeth. Regular check-ups are needed until the tooth is naturally replaced.
