Periodontitis itself is not a contagious disease like flu. However, the bacteria that cause the inflammation can be passed on. This happens, for example, through saliva when sharing cutlery or toothbrushes. Within families we sometimes see similar bacterial profiles. Whether someone actually develops the disease depends on their immune system, predisposition and oral hygiene. That is why it is important that family members also practise good oral care. For partners, it can help to visit the dental hygienist together. Children of parents with periodontitis have an increased risk. Good prevention and education can limit transmission. Periodontitis remains primarily the result of long-term inflammation caused by dental plaque.
