Can periodontitis be hereditary?

Yes, genetic predisposition plays a role in susceptibility to periodontitis.

Periodontitis is caused by bacteria, but genetic susceptibility influences how it progresses. People with a family history of gum problems are at greater risk. Genetic predisposition partly determines how the immune system responds to bacterial load. With the same amount of dental plaque, one person may develop more damage than another. If you know that tooth loss runs in your family, discuss this with your dentist. Early screening helps to start prevention in good time. Predisposition is no guarantee of periodontitis, but it does increase the likelihood. Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups remain the best defence. Some patients are offered a genetic test in severe cases. Treatment is always aimed at reducing the bacterial load.
