Periodontology - Multidisciplinary Care

How do I know whether I have periodontitis if I have no symptoms?

Only a dentist or periodontist can determine this, using measurements and X-rays.

Periodontitis often progresses without pain, especially in the early stages. You yourself notice little, apart from perhaps some bleeding gums or an unpleasant taste. A professional diagnosis is needed to detect periodontitis. The dentist measures the periodontal pocket depths around your teeth with a special probe. Pocket depths of 4 mm or more combined with bone loss indicate periodontitis. X-rays are also used to make bone loss visible. If in doubt, the dentist will refer you to a periodontist. Regular check-ups are important to identify this silent condition in time. Early detection makes treatment simpler and more successful. A healthy mouth starts with prevention and awareness.
