Periodontology - Multidisciplinary Care

Why is multidisciplinary care important in the treatment of periodontitis?

Multidisciplinary care provides an integrated approach, which improves treatment outcomes.

Periodontitis is a complex condition that is not treated by the periodontist alone. Many patients with periodontitis have underlying systemic conditions such as diabetes or heart problems. A multidisciplinary approach means that the dentist, periodontist, GP and sometimes a hospital physician work together. This ensures that both oral health and general health are optimised. In the case of diabetes, for example, the GP can help to improve blood glucose control. The periodontist focuses on reducing inflammation and supporting tissue repair. Regular consultation between healthcare providers allows the treatment to be tailored to individual needs. The dental hygienist also plays a role in aftercare and in preventing problems from recurring. Sharing information across disciplines makes for a more efficient and patient-centred approach. In this way the risk of complications is reduced and overall oral health improves.
